Even in these times, the collection of different equipment which assemble together to form a standard PC, can be run for a good number of years with timely replacements.

Negating the fact, that a PC can be too old to repair; it is extremely important for us to know, how to prolong the lifespan of the Desktop PC. There is only 1 major reason to prolong the lifespan of your PC. And yes, you guessed it right, it has to be better ‘Return on Investment’.

To ensure the lifespan of your PC’s hardware & software increases, below mentioned are a few tips which would help you –

1. Maintenance Schedule – A maintenance schedule for your desktop PC, once a month, is of paramount importance. Activities like, an anti virus scan, running a defragmentation program, proper storage of files, deleting old files, hard disc check must be religiously done.

You also need to clean your key-board, brush the desktop & CPU, so that dirt stays away.

2. Power Supply – Your power supply to your PC should never wipe out your computer in that fraction of a second. The reason I mention this is, a power surge often is accompanied by a sudden rise in the electrical output which is enough to cause catastrophic damage to the PC’s hardware.

Hence, it is better & of economic sense to invest into a surge protector, which will eradicate all power supply concerns. Investing into a surge protector won’t cost you much, but the benefits in the long run would definitely be better than what you had expected.

3. Climate Control – There is a lot of inter dependency of the PC’s parts on each other. In totality, the PC’s components, if not stored properly, would not function at their optimal levels.

Extreme pressure & temperature conditions generally result in the metal being worn out & cause electrical short-circuits. Hence, the desktop PC must always be kept in normal room temperature, without any direct exposure to sunlight. If it can be away from humidity levels of more than 50 percent, nothing like it.

4. Avoid Eating near your PC – We all would admit that we do indulge in eating or drinking near our PC. It’s high time to rectify it, else the big spill might cause permanent damage to your PC.

Electronics & liquids should never mix, and if they mix, they would never work at their best efficiency again. Hence, the table is where foods & drinks should be had. On the lighter note, don’t behave like a geek all the time. It’s better to be away from your desktop PC to have meals.

Apart from the above, it is also important to keep your computer cool after long hours of usage. Especially when, video games or movies are run on the PC for good hours at a stretch.

Equally important is, keeping your computer up to date with the software up-gradations are also helpful in prolonging your PC’s lifespan.

Following the above steps will not only guarantee you prolonging your PC’s lifespan, but it will also ensure that there are very minimal hassles which you would face with your PC’s hardware and software.

Although I’m not familiar with hardware I think the most important thing you need to do to prolong your PC lifespan is keeping it in a dust free environment.

I had no idea that a surge protector was so integral to a computer’s performance. It’s such an easy fix! I’m going to get one for our computer tomorrow…

Also prevent the habit of pulling on the power cord tendency is that if you tugg your power cord this will damage the power socket.
